Combust Planets in Vedic Astrology: Meaning, Effects and Exceptions

Scroll through enough chart readings and you'll eventually hit a warning about a combust planet — usually framed as bad news. The real picture is more nuanced than that single word suggests.

What is combustion?

A planet is considered combust when it comes sufficiently close to the Sun, by degree, according to the relevant Jyotish rules. The idea is that the Sun's brightness "overshadows" a planet near it, much like how a star too close to the Sun becomes invisible to the naked eye — the planet's own significations are considered harder to see clearly in the chart.

Why the Sun matters

The Sun's proximity is the entire basis of combustion. Each planet has its own threshold — a distance in degrees within which it's considered combust — and that threshold differs by planet.

• Mercury combustion — Mercury orbits close to the Sun, so it's combust relatively often; its communication and intellect-related themes are read as needing more support elsewhere in the chart when this happens.
• Venus combustion — similarly common given Venus's orbit; affects themes of relationships and comfort.
• Mars combustion — less frequent, tied to themes of courage and drive.
• Jupiter combustion — read carefully, since Jupiter's themes of wisdom and expansion are considered significant to have "overshadowed."
• Saturn combustion — relatively rare given Saturn's distance from the Sun, and given particular weight when it occurs.

Different planets carry different combustion thresholds and different traditional weight given to the condition — there's no single universal rule applied identically to all nine.

Combustion vs retrograde vs debilitation

These three get confused often, but they're separate conditions:

• Combustion is about proximity to the Sun.
• Retrograde is about a planet's apparent backward motion as seen from Earth.
• Debilitation is about which zodiac sign a planet sits in, regardless of the Sun's position.

A planet can be combust without being retrograde or debilitated, and vice versa — each condition is evaluated independently before being weighed together.

The important interpretation

Avoid the shortcut: "combust planet = bad planet." A planet's real condition in a chart depends on far more than combustion alone — its exact degree, the house and sign it's in, its overall strength, the aspects and conjunctions it's part of, and the Dasha period it rules or is ruled by. Combustion is one factor among several, not a verdict on its own.
