What Is Manglik Dosha (Kuja Dosha) — and When Does It Cancel?

Manglik Dosha — also called Kuja Dosha or Bhauma Dosha — is one of the most commonly checked conditions before a Vedic marriage match is finalized. It's formed by Mars, not by a "bad" chart in general, and it's also one of the most misunderstood doshas, largely because its cancellation rules get left out of casual explanations far more often than the dosha itself.

What creates it

A chart is considered Manglik when Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house — counted from the Ascendant. Several traditions also check the same five houses counted from the Moon and from Venus, which is why two astrologers can occasionally disagree on whether a chart is Manglik at all: they may be checking from different reference points.

Why these houses specifically

Each of the five houses touches marriage or partnership in some way — the 7th is the house of partnership itself, the 8th of shared resources and transformation, the 4th of domestic life, the 1st of the self, and the 12th of loss and bedroom matters. Mars, a fiery and assertive planet, is traditionally considered to introduce friction or impatience when it sits in a house governing closeness with another person.

Cancellation (Bhanga) conditions

Classical Jyotish doesn't treat Manglik Dosha as a fixed life sentence — it lists specific conditions, called Bhanga, under which the dosha is considered neutralized:

• Mars sitting in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or its sign of exaltation (Capricorn).
• Mars receiving a strong aspect from, or conjunction with, Jupiter or Venus.
• Both partners in a proposed match being Manglik — a very commonly applied cancellation in practice, sometimes called "mutual cancellation."
• Certain age and life-stage considerations that some regional traditions apply.

Because different schools of Jyotish assign different weight to each of these, whether a specific chart counts as "cancelled" is genuinely a matter of which tradition — and which astrologer — is doing the reading.

Not a verdict on the person
