If you remember one thing about kitchen Vastu, make it this: the kitchen belongs to fire, and Vastu gives fire the south-east. Almost every other kitchen recommendation follows from that and from one more idea: keep fire and water apart.

Where the kitchen goes

In Vastu's map of the five elements, the south-east is the zone of Agni, fire. That makes it the traditional home of the kitchen.

The Vastu planner in the Aroha Astrology app applies this table to a drawn plan. In the short film below, a kitchen in the north scores 70; moved to the south-east it scores 88.

Eight directions, one right corner. In the Aroha Astrology app’s Vastu planner you draw your home room by room and each room is judged by its direction. A kitchen in the north scores 70 and is marked as needing work; moved to the south-east, the traditional fire corner, the score rises to 88. Questions about the plan can be asked in the app’s chat. Inside the kitchen

Vastu applies the same directional logic within the room itself. Think of the kitchen as a small plan with its own eight directions.

Fire and water apart

The stove (fire) and the sink (water) are elemental opposites in Vastu. Traditional guidance is to keep them apart: not side by side on the same stretch of counter and not directly facing each other across the kitchen. On an L-shaped platform, putting the hob on one arm and the sink on the other usually solves it.

Which way to face

Facing east while cooking is the most common instruction, with north as a second choice. In practice this means the hob sits against the east wall or in the south-east corner. An east-facing cook also gets the morning light, which is one of the places where tradition and practicality agree.

Kitchen, door and bathroom

  • Not directly facing the main entrance, in popular guidance, so the stove isn't the first thing seen from the door.
  • Not sharing a wall with a toilet, or directly above or below one in a multi-storey home, where it can be avoided.
  • Not the passageway through the home: a kitchen that people must walk through to reach other rooms is discouraged.

Colours and upkeep

Warm colours are traditional for kitchens: shades of orange, yellow, terracotta or warm cream. Black and very dark finishes are commonly discouraged. Most practitioners put as much weight on cleanliness as on colour: a clean hob, no leaking taps, no stale food and a clutter-free counter.

Where tradition meets practicality

A few kitchen rules sound mystical but have sensible effects:

  • An east window gives morning light and cross-ventilation.
  • Separating the hob from the sink reduces splashes near a flame and gives two people room to work.
  • Keeping the kitchen off the main circulation route is good for safety.

None of this proves Vastu's claims about fire and prosperity. It does mean following these suggestions rarely costs you anything.

In a modular kitchen

Most flat kitchens come with the platform, gas line and plumbing fixed. What you can usually still do:

If your kitchen is in the north-east or another discouraged zone, the usual practitioner advice is to make these arrangements within the room and leave the structure as it is. Nothing in the traditional texts suggests alarm, and a gas line should only ever be moved by a qualified professional for safety reasons, not for Vastu.
