Your birth chart is fixed the moment you're born — but the planets keep moving. Gochar, or transit, is how Vedic astrology tracks that ongoing movement and reads it against the chart you were born with.
What is Gochar?
Two things are always in play together in transit analysis:
Natal chart — the planetary positions at the exact moment of your birth, permanently fixed.
Current planetary transits — the planets' actual positions in the sky right now, constantly moving.
Gochar is the practice of overlaying today's planetary positions onto your natal chart — checking which of your natal houses each moving planet is currently passing through, and what that's traditionally understood to activate.
The major transits worth tracking
- Saturn — slow-moving, associated with long structural periods and lessons
- Jupiter — slow-moving, associated with growth and expansion cycles
- Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes, moving in reverse through the zodiac
- Mars — faster-moving, tied to bursts of energy and action
- Venus, Mercury — faster still, shorter-lived influences
- Sun, Moon — the fastest, shifting focus day to day and month to month
Why slow-moving planets are especially important
Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu can spend a year or more in a single sign, which is exactly why they're given particular weight when studying longer-term transit themes — a fast planet's transit passes in days, but a slow planet's transit through a sensitive house can shape an entire year or more.

Transits are rarely read in isolation. Most Vedic astrology approaches consider Dashas and transits together rather than using a transit by itself for detailed timing — the Dasha sets which planet's themes are already active in your life, and the transit shows what's currently triggering them.
