Ask an Indian astrologer for your janma nakshatra and you'll get a name — Ashwini, Bharani, Rohini — that's more specific than any zodiac sign. The Nakshatra is the layer of Vedic astrology sitting directly beneath your Moon sign, and once you know yours, several other pieces of your chart — from your Dasha timeline to your compatibility matching — start making a lot more sense.

The zodiac cut into 27 pieces, not 12

Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac (360° divided by 27). Since a zodiac sign spans 30°, roughly two and a quarter Nakshatras fit inside each sign — meaning your Moon sign alone doesn't tell you your Nakshatra. You need the Moon's precise degree at birth, which needs an accurate birth time.

Padas: quarters within quarters

Each Nakshatra further divides into four Padas of 3°20' each — 108 Padas across the full zodiac. Traditionally, the Pada your Moon falls in decides the first syllable recommended for a newborn's name, one of the oldest continuously practiced applications of this system.

Every Nakshatra has a ruling planet

The 27 Nakshatras are each assigned one of the nine grahas as ruler, cycling in a fixed order — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — repeated three times to cover all 27. Gana, deity, and symbol
