What is a Janam Kundli?

A Janam Kundli, or birth chart, is a map of exactly where the Sun, Moon and every other planet were positioned at the precise moment you were born, viewed from your exact birthplace. It's calculated from three inputs:

• Date of birth
• Exact time of birth
• Birthplace

Change any one of these — especially the time — and the resulting chart can shift meaningfully, since houses and the Ascendant move quickly across the sky.

What does a Kundli contain?

A full Kundli brings together several layers of information:

• Lagna — your Ascendant, the anchor point of the whole chart

• Nakshatra — the lunar mansion your Moon falls in

• Houses — the 12 life areas each planet is placed in

The North Indian style uses a fixed diamond layout where the houses stay in the same position and the signs rotate into place; the South Indian style fixes the signs in place and lets the houses rotate instead.
